Our Approach
Objective Straight Chiropractic
In 1895, D.D. Palmer (the Discoverer of Chiropractic) noted that
certain medical conditions were alleviated by moving bones. At that time
there were probably hundreds of other procedures that were being
performed to alleviate human ailments, none of which are around today,
everything from bleeding to magnetic healing. Most of them we never
heard of because they were not noteworthy. They have passed from the
scene because they did not work or if they worked they did more harm
than good.
Chiropractic has been utilized for over 110 years because it obviously does
something. It has more practitioners than ever before in history and
millions of satisfied patients for over a century, many of whom come
back on a regular basis. All of this, despite the fact that very few
people understand the true objective of chiropractic. The success of
chiropractic with a multitude of conditions means something. Anecdotal
success must have some validity. Some people would ascribe
chiropractic's numerous successes with varied conditions to positive
thinking, coincidence or mass hysteria. Chiropractic had to possess
something in order to succeed, despite the opposition of the medical
community who were convinced that no single procedure could be the cure
for everything. Millions of intelligent and reasonable people including
legislators and insurance companies concluded that chiropractic worked
on some level.
Along came the objective straight chiropractor who presented a
reason why chiropractic "works" for some people and not for others, why
certain conditions are alleviated in some and not in others, why
chiropractic appears to have some success with all kinds of medical
ailments. They presented the reasonable explanation that chiropractic is
not a treatment or cure for medical conditions (which makes the medical
community happy). Chiropractic does one thing; it allows the body to
work better, to function at a higher level, to improve well being. That
is the reason for the apparent successes in so many varied conditions. A
body working better has greater potential to heal all types of
conditions. It is also the reason for "chiropractic failures". Even
though chiropractic adjustments enable the body to work better,
sometimes that improved function is not sufficient to enable the body to
heal itself. So despite working better, the body cannot heal and either
the patient must learn to live with a condition or seek care in the
therapeutic realm.
Objective straight chiropractic further reasons that if the body
works better with adjustments and chiropractic is not correcting the
cause of disease, then it must make the body work better in all people;
even those who do not get well, those who have no apparent problems or
conditions and everyone in between. Objective chiropractic further
reasons that a body working better because of no interference to the
nerve system will be affected in a positive manner in other areas of
human function beside disease and health. While we cannot measure
quantitatively the improvement in a person under chiropractic care, the
fact that varied and serious conditions have been known to disappear,
improvement must be of a significant nature and failure to keep the body
free of nerve interference must be a significant factor in the loss of
health or decreased ability to function in all areas of life.
This idea was so logical to chiropractors that they began to have
themselves and their families adjusted on a regular basis. They further
determined that if it is good and necessary for them and their families
(the idea of regularly checking the spine for nerve interference and
removing it when found) it is good for all humanity and perhaps there
were enough people out there who would agree and want this type of care
for themselves and their families. After all, there are millions of
people who drink bottled water, take supplements, eat nutritionally,
exercise regularly, and in many ways take care of themselves for no
other reason than because their body will work better. Chiropractors
concluded that if they can find enough people interested in this type of
care, they cannot only make a living but they can contribute to the
betterment of society. That is how this unique approach to chiropractic
with its lifetime maintenance care developed.
The Greater Pittsburgh Chiropractic Centers, Inc. has used this
unique approach - objective straight chiropractic care - for over 20
years. Dr Grossman’s Insight
"Unique Objective Chiropractic Care" for Over 20 Years! Dr.
Scott Grossman would like to adjust a huge misconception about
chiropractic care: it's not for people with severe back pain.
In fact, says the internationally recognized chiropractor, exploring
chiropractic only when you are hurt misses one of its most important
benefits: the ability to help your body avoid the problems you don't
feel. "If your spine and nervous system aren't properly aligned, they
can affect you in many ways, including interfering with the function of
your vital organs," Dr. Grossman says.
Dr. Grossman, a graduate of Temple University and the Pennsylvania
College of Chiropractic, ought to know. As his Greater Pittsburgh
Chiropractic Centers celebrate over 20 years of service in 2005, it's
grown to become one of the largest chiropractic practices in the world.
From offices in Wexford in the North Hills, Imperial in the western
suburbs of Pittsburgh, and Cranberry Twp. in Butler County, Dr. Grossman
and his staff see more than 500 patients a week, including more than 100
children and even infants. All of Dr. Grossman's patients are seeking
one thing: to enable their bodies to work better, to function at a
higher level, and as a result, achieve higher levels of well being.
"We're different than a lot of other chiropractic practices," says
Dr. Grossman. "We provide what's called objective chiropractic. We focus
on taking people who are fine, and keeping them fine."
Because chiropractors focus on the nerve system, "if you have a spine
and stress, you are a candidate for objective chiropractic," Dr.
Grossman says. He adds that routine care and maintenance of the nerve
system is an integral part of a balanced approach to well being.
Dr. Grossman traces his knowledge of chiropractic directly to one of
its founders, Dr. B.J. Palmer. Dr. Grossman learned from chiropractors
trained directly by Dr. Palmer, who began his practice in 1904. In turn,
Dr. Grossman himself has helped train hundreds of chiropractors.
Over the course of the last two decades, his knowledge and experience
have earned Dr. Grossman numerous accolades and awards. In addition to
being an international speaker on the principles of chiropractic, he has
received national leadership awards from Congress, is a lifetime member
of the Who's Who National Registry, and belongs to the Federation of
Straight Chiropractic, the Chiropractic Fellowship of Pennsylvania and
the Garden State Chiropractic Society.
Along the way, Dr. Grossman estimates he has personally provided more
than 1 million chiropractic adjustments to his patients. And he counts
some pretty famous backs among those adjustments - defensive and
offensive backs, as in Pittsburgh Steeler players.
The same skills that help keep professional athletes aligned are
available through Dr. Grossman's three offices, which feature evening
hours, 24-hour emergency care, and that rarity of 21st-century, house
calls.
"We always have more than one doctor available, and we feature a
complete insurance billing department. There's no work involved for the
patient," says Dr. Grossman.
Dr. Grossman's patients feel just as strongly about objective
chiropractic care as he does.
"We want to get chiropractic to the world," Dr. Grossman says. "I
thank my patients for their commitment and support over the last 20
years."
