Medical Myths

Medical Myth #1 - True or False:

"I don't have back pain which means I don't need Chiropractic care..."

False - Your spine can be misaligned for up to 20 years without symptoms. Just like cancer isn't detected for years, these undetected misalignments are causing nerve compression leading to interference to your Nerve System that controls and coordinates all bodily functions.

Call today to schedule a complimentary exam to see if you are misaligned.

Medical Myth #2 - True or False:

“I can’t afford chiropractic care...”

False….. Here at the Greater Pittsburgh Chiropractic Centers, Inc. we have never lost a patient due to financial constraints. It is our mission to help as many people through chiropractic as we can and we would love the opportunity to help you! Over 50% of our patient do not have insurance coverage for chiropractic care but we will do everything we can to make your care affordable. Medical Myth #3 - True or False:

“Chiropractic is for adults only…”

False….. Since significant spinal trauma can occur during the birth process many parents have their newborns checked for spinal nerve stress (subluxations.) Later, learning to walk, or ride a bicycle, and many other childhood activities can cause spinal problems. Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off as "growing pains" can often be traced to spinal problems. Naturally, Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to a child’s spine. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and seem much healthier than other children. Chiropractic for children can help to avoid many other health complaints seen later in adulthood.

Medical Myth #4 - True or False:

“Your bones grind against each other during an adjustment...”

False….. The noise is actually the release of CO2 gas from the spine that creates the popping sound you hear after the adjustments. It’s called Boyle’s Law in Physics. We do not crack bones, pop bones, crunch them or bang them together. This noise is normal when getting your spine adjusted and does not cause any type of damage to your bones and joints. Greater Pittsburgh Chiropractic centers even has a "noise free" method of adjusting if the sound bothers you.

Medical Myth #5 - True or False:

“I can adjust my own spine…”

False….. Some people can make their joints "pop," but that's not an adjustment! Worse damage can occur by mobilizing a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. Adjustments are specific and take years to master. Even your chiropractor must consult a colleague for an adjustment to benefit from chiropractic care.

Medical Myth #6- True or False:

“Chiropractic is just for spine pain…”

False…..

In a 2006 research study it was found that “chiropractic adjustments in the thoracic spine appears to be able to influence autonomic output to the heart.” Another study in 2007 showed “Evidence from controlled studies and usual practice supports chiropractic care (the entire clinical encounter) as providing benefit to patients with asthma, cervicogenic vertigo, and infantile colic. Evidence was promising for potential benefit of manual procedures for children with otitis media and elderly patients with pneumonia”

Medical Myth #7- True or False:

“Chiropractors are not real doctors…”

False…..

A Doctorate of Chiropractic program takes 4 years to complete and includes at least 4,200 hours of specialized clinical training which includes the study of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, toxicopharmacology, microbiology, and neurology, amongst MANY others. A chiropractor must pass 4 Parts of National Boards, Physiotherapy and a specific State Board Exam to qualify for a license. To maintain their license, a chiropractor must complete 24 hours per year of continuing education courses to ensure updated knowledge in all aspects of patient care.

Medical Myth #8- True or False:

“Once you go to the Chiropractor, you’ll always have to go…”

False…..

In our office we have three types of care: relief care, corrective care and maintenance care. Pain usually subsides in the first 2-4 weeks. However, correcting the cause of a problem takes longer. You have the option of discontinuing care when the pain subsides, when you complete the corrective procedure, or you can continue with what we call maintenance care. It is completely up to you . The purpose of maintenance care is to keep your spine healthy and to avoid a re occurrence of a spinal-related problem. Just as you go to the dentist for regular checkups, having your spine checked by the doctor is as important, if not more so. But the choice is always yours.

Medical Myth #9- True or False:

“Chiropractic care is too expensive…”

False…..

Chiropractic care should be looked at as an investment in your health. By going to see your chiropractor you will be saving money on other health care expenses like going to see your medical doctor and over-the-counter and prescription medication. One specific study showed that 87% of long-time chiropractic patients considered their health as excellent, they took fewer medications, and experienced less chronic conditions associated with aging. Many insurance companies including Medicare cover adjustments because they have statistically quantified the benefits of preventative care versus drugs and surgery. Even if you don’t have insurance, we always do our best to make chiropractic care as affordable as possible. You can’t afford not to see your chiropractor!!!! Medical Myth #10- True or False:

“I need to ask my medical doctor if I can see a chiropractor…”

False....

The reality is that, although thoroughly trained, most medical doctors are not educated on what chiropractors actually do and therefore do not fully understand the benefits of chiropractic care. Have you ever heard of a chiropractor telling someone not to go see a medical doctor if they had the flu or an orthopedic doctor if they had a broken bone? NO! Of course not! Chiropractors are thoroughly educated and board certified to adjust your spine. We are the ONLY doctors who know what is best for your spine when it come to the detection and correction of subluxations for better health.

Medical Myth #11- True or False:

“Chiropractic care is just for low back pain…”

False....

There have been hundreds of research articles published proving all of wonderful benefits that chiropractic care can provide even if you do not have any pain at all. Did you know that chiropractic care has been shown to BOOST IMMUNITY, IMPROVE SLEEP QUALITY, REDUCE STRESS, AND EVEN HELP YOU LIVE LONGER!! Chiropractic care helps every body to function at its highest potential regardless of how young or how old you are. Do you want to live up to your fullest potential? Try chiropractic!!

Medical Myth #12- True or False:

“Cracking your back yourself is the same thing going to a Chiropractor…”

False....

This falsehood is particularly frustrating considering the amount of advanced training each chiropractor has to receive in order to practice. This training enables chiropractors to have an intricate understanding of the sensitive nature of joints and how they function. Just because you hear a noise when you crack your back at home does not mean you have achieved the same results as a precise spinal adjustment that you receive from a chiropractor. Trust your chiropractor...He's got your back!

Medical Myth #13- True or False:

“Chiropractic care is addictive…”

False....

If only it were, there would be more healthy people around and chiropractors would not get patients who last saw a chiropractor a few years ago when their back went out. It is possible to get used to feeling more balanced, less stressed, and more energetic as a result or regular chiropractic care. Chiropractic is not addictive, however, good health is.

Medical Myth #14- True or False:

“Chiropractic care is for adults only…”

False....

A 2012 study published in Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments greatly reduced colic symptoms. In fact, there have been literally scores of case studies documenting how children suffering from otitis media (ear infections), acid reflux and colic have experienced complete to near complete resolution after just a few visits.

Medical Myth #15- True or False:

“You should only see a chiropractor if you are in pain…”

False....

Chiropractic is becoming more of a treatment of choice by professional and amateur athletes to help them reach their peak performance. This has been evident in the treatment of collegiate, Olympic, and professional athletes around the world. Chiropractic care is not only limited to the more advanced athlete, but young athletes are able to benefit from chiropractic treatment as well. This is especially true in the areas of critical, acute, and emergency care. So maybe your favorite athlete goes to see a chiropractor.

Medical Myth #16- True or False:

“Chiropractic adjustments are dangerous…”

False....

Records from insurance and court cases have constantly shown that chiropractic is the safest portal of entry health care available to the public today. Although no healthcare procedures are 100% safe, chiropractic stands on its record of safety and effectiveness unmatched in healthcare.

All available evidence demonstrates that chiropractic treatment holds an extremely small risk. The chiropractic profession takes this issue very seriously and engages in training and postgraduate education courses to recognize the risk factors in patients, and to continue rendering treatment in the most effective and responsible manner.
